We are seeking a Computational Scientist – Scientific AI & Machine Learning to join our dynamic team and help us drive the next wave of transformative research.
As a key member of our team, you will leverage AI and machine learning to support researchers across disciplines—from computer vision and NLP to data analysis and forecasting. In this role, you will work closely with faculty, post-docs, and students to develop custom AI/ML solutions that push the boundaries of their research, enhance collaboration, and provide critical insights into a wide variety of scientific questions.

Key Responsibilities:
- AI & ML Expertise: Serve as the domain expert for applying AI and machine learning across various research projects.
- Tailored Solutions: Collaborate with faculty to design and implement computational methods and tools that advance research goals.
- Build Advanced Pipelines: Develop, maintain, and optimize AI/ML pipelines for data analysis, including applications in computer vision, NLP, predictive modeling, and more.
- Innovative Problem-Solving: Use machine learning techniques such as regression, classification, anomaly detection, and forecasting to solve complex research challenges.
- Training & Support: Lead workshops, create documentation, and provide hands-on training to researchers in the UChicago community.
- Grant Support: Contribute to research grant proposals, outlining AI and machine learning methods and their potential to drive forward research initiatives.
Ideal Candidate:
- Technical Expertise: Experience with machine learning frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Keras, and proficiency in Python (NumPy, Pandas, SciPy, Scikit-learn).
- AI/ML Specialization: Hands-on experience in AI/ML techniques such as computer vision, NLP, causal AI, reinforcement learning, or generative AI.
- Scientific Mindset: Strong ability to translate scientific research questions into computational solutions, making complex concepts accessible to diverse audiences.
- Collaborative Spirit: Excellent communication skills and the ability to work closely with researchers from varied disciplines.
- Commitment to Learning: Passion for continuous learning and the ability to stay up-to-date with the latest AI/ML advancements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field.
- Experience with deep learning, causal AI, or reinforcement learning.
- Proficiency in additional programming languages such as C/C++, Matlab, or R.
- Familiarity with Linux/Unix systems and version control tools like Git.
