About the Role

As an Enterprise Data Scientist at VCU Health, you’ll be at the forefront of innovation, combining advanced analytics with healthcare insights to tackle real-world problems. From designing predictive models to developing transformative AI/ML solutions, this role offers the opportunity to:

  • Shape the organization’s AI/ML strategy and roadmap, elevating AI maturity to a transformational level.
  • Develop and implement Responsible and Ethical AI guidelines to ensure transparency and integrity.
  • Lead initiatives to create state-of-the-art predictive, prescriptive, and NLP/GenAI/LLM-based tools, enhancing patient care and operational workflows.
  • Build AI-driven automation solutions that optimize processes and unlock breakthrough opportunities.
  • Collaborate with clinicians, researchers, and stakeholders to translate domain-specific needs into actionable computational solutions.

What You’ll Do

  • Model Development: Design, deploy, and maintain predictive and prescriptive models using AI/ML techniques and advanced analytics.
  • Data Innovation: Work with structured, semi-structured, and unstructured clinical data, leveraging NLP, Foundation Models, and other advanced methodologies.
  • MLOps Leadership: Establish and maintain a robust model lifecycle management practice.
  • Performance Insights: Develop tools to audit, analyze, and ensure model accuracy and reliability.
  • Training & Mentorship: Coach end users and mentor team members to elevate the organization’s data science capabilities.
  • Stay Ahead: Continuously explore advancements in AI, deep learning, and neural network technologies to deliver state-of-the-art solutions.

What You’ll Bring

We’re looking for a passionate, highly skilled individual with the following qualifications:

Education

  • Required: Master’s degree in applied mathematics, computer science, engineering, statistics, or a related field.
  • Preferred: PhD in a quantitative field.

Experience

  • Required:
    • 7+ years in Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence, including Python or R and SQL.
    • 5+ years in a healthcare environment solving clinical or operational problems.
    • Experience working with unstructured data, big data, and tools like PyTorch, TensorFlow, Keras, or Numpy.
    • Familiarity with Foundation Models, fine-tuning, or Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG).
    • Knowledge of Cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Preferred:
    • Understanding of Data Management, BI, ETL, and Data Governance.
    • Displays intellectual curiosity, integrity, and a commitment to continuous learning.
