The University of Michigan-Flint is seeking a Research Assistant I (Temp) for a Data Annotation project to help improve information literacy by labeling content within news articles and social media posts. This is a great opportunity for undergraduate students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in data annotation, research, and AI model training.
What You’ll Do:As a Data Annotation Research Assistant, you'll play a vital role in helping improve AI models by labeling text within news articles and social media posts. Your work will focus on identifying the type of framing used in the content, such as economic, political, or environmental themes.
- Engage with Training: Attend two online training sessions to learn the ins and outs of data annotation and the framework we use.
- Annotate Data: Label text in news articles and social media posts based on framing themes (economic, political, etc.) using an online platform.
- Collaborate: Work with Graduate Student Research Assistants (GSRAs) and professors, providing feedback and contributing to the research process.
- Remote Flexibility: Complete your tasks remotely, while staying connected with the team through regular communication.
What We’re Looking For:This is a temporary, part-time role that requires a strong work ethic and the ability to work independently.
Required Qualifications:
- Current University of Michigan undergraduate student in good academic standing, or recently graduated from a UM undergraduate program (and not currently enrolled in a graduate program).
- Ability to work independently in a remote setting using an online data annotation platform (requires access to a computer with an internet connection).
- Willingness to attend training sessions via Zoom.
- Excellent organization and written communication skills.
Desired Qualifications:
- Background in political science, psychology, environmental science, communication, linguistics, journalism, and/or artificial intelligence.
- Regular reader of news articles related to climate change, medicine, immigration, and other current events.
- Familiarity with social media platforms.
- Previous experience with data annotation for AI model training is a plus.
- Motivation to contribute to research focused on improving information literacy.
