Data Scientist 3
Location: Remote Work

Job Description:

Are you passionate about data science, machine learning, and advancing oceanic research? The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the University of Miami is looking for an experienced Data Scientist 3 to join an innovative research team supporting NOAA's Southeast Fisheries Science Center. This exciting opportunity is open to candidates in Galveston, TX, Pascagoula, MS, Miami, FL, or remote locations.

About the Project:This national research project is focused on modernizing the analysis of active acoustic (echosounder) data, specifically for echo classification in fisheries acoustics. As a Data Scientist 3, you will play a pivotal role in developing AI/ML models and cloud-based frameworks that will significantly improve the classification of acoustic backscatter in near-real time. This groundbreaking work will help push the boundaries of echo classification by utilizing advanced processing techniques to classify acoustic data to the lowest taxonomic level.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Data Development: Utilize validated active acoustic and co-variate datasets to develop and validate cutting-edge methods for echo classification.
  • Cloud Integration: Assist with the development of data transfer protocols, pipelines, and guidelines for cloud storage and computing on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • AI/ML Exploration: Propose, develop, and test AI/ML, Bayesian, or other advanced modeling approaches to classify backscatter from various echosounder data (e.g., Continuous Wave EK60/EK80, Frequency Modulated EK80).
  • Collaboration: Work with both commercial and academic partners to develop an operational toolbox for automated or semi-automated echo classification and implement it on local and cloud platforms.
  • Testing and Refinement: Assess the precision and recall of the AI/ML methods and refine algorithms based on performance metrics.
  • Training and Mentorship: Communicate findings and help train others on the techniques and methodologies developed, ensuring the seamless integration of AI/ML models into real-world applications.

What You Need:

  • Education: Doctoral degree in a relevant field (e.g., Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, etc.).
  • AI/ML Proficiency: Strong skills in machine learning, AI methods, and Bayesian techniques.
  • Software Expertise: Proficiency in Python, R, and experience with cloud-based platforms like Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Echosounder Knowledge: Experience with or willingness to learn software like Echoview, Echopype, and PyEchoLab.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for training, collaboration, and reporting results.
  • Collaboration: Ability to work with diverse teams across time zones and geographic locations.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience developing and testing AI/ML models.
  • Familiarity with cloud processing pipelines and relational databases.
  • Understanding of fisheries acoustics and echosounder data analysis.
  • Experience with advanced data processing and modeling approaches in oceanic sciences.

Why This Role is Unique:

  • Impactful Work: Contribute to revolutionizing the way NOAA and other organizations analyze echosounder data to make real-time, data-driven decisions in fisheries management and marine science.
  • Collaborative Environment: Work with top-tier professionals across the commercial, academic, and governmental sectors to drive forward-thinking solutions.
  • Flexible Location: The position is based at NOAA’s Fisheries Southeast Fisheries Science Center in Galveston, TX, Pascagoula, MS, or Miami, FL—remote work options are available.
  • Competitive Salary: We offer a competitive salary based on your qualifications and experience, along with the opportunity to be a key player in a critical national research project.

Ready to Dive In?This position is funded for 3 years, and we’re looking for a motivated, skilled data scientist to make a lasting impact in the field of marine acoustics. If you’re ready to apply your AI/ML expertise to drive real-world solutions, we want to hear from you!

To apply, please submit a statement of interest, CV, and three references to the University of Miami.

Equal Opportunity Employer: The University of Miami is committed to building a diverse and inclusive workforce. We encourage women, minorities, veterans, and individuals with disabilities to apply.
