As part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers, data engineers, and developers, you’ll design, build, and maintain bioinformatic pipelines that push the boundaries of cancer research and healthcare.

Your Role:As a Biomedical Data Scientist 2, you’ll lead the development of innovative bioinformatic tools and pipelines that integrate with our state-of-the-art data analytics platform. You’ll leverage your expertise in big data and AI approaches to analyze large-scale biomedical datasets, driving key insights that will contribute directly to accelerating cancer research and improving patient outcomes. Your contributions will have a lasting impact on both academic advancements and real-world clinical applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead Development: Spearhead the creation of data portals for storing, managing, and analyzing multidimensional biomedical data, integrating multiple datasets (e.g., RNA-seq, WGS, ATAC-seq) into Sylvester's infrastructure.
  • Drive Innovation: Develop pipelines and workflows that integrate publicly available datasets with cutting-edge research tools, enhancing data accessibility and usability.
  • Build Algorithms: Leverage AI and computational algorithms to identify novel drug targets and develop strategies for effective drug combination prioritization.
  • Optimization: Use predictive modeling to optimize research outcomes and continuously refine and improve model performance.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with research scientists, data engineers, and stakeholders across the university to drive data-driven solutions, ensuring smooth implementation and feedback loops.
  • Monitor and Analyze: Develop tools and processes for monitoring model performance, ensuring data accuracy, and enhancing predictive capabilities.
  • Documentation: Write and maintain standard operating procedures and documentation to ensure consistency and high standards in data handling and analysis.

Core Qualifications:

  • Educational Background: PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, statistics, data science, computer science, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Technical Expertise: Fluency in R or Python, and experience working in Unix (bash).
  • Bioinformatics Proficiency: Experience with NGS data analysis and tools like BWA, STAR, Picard, GATK, as well as bioinformatics workflow systems (e.g., Cromwell) and pipeline languages (WDL).
  • Data Management: Familiarity with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL) and/or NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB).
  • Version Control: Experience using Git for version control in collaborative environments.
  • Collaboration Skills: Strong communication, organizational, and time-management skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of relevant experience, including at least 4 years in bioinformatics.
  • Cloud Computing: Familiarity with Cloud environments (e.g., Azure), and container technologies (e.g., Docker).
  • Machine Learning: Experience with ML frameworks (e.g., Scikit-learn, TensorFlow) and deploying machine learning models.
  • High Performance Computing: Exposure to HPC environments is a plus.
