The Institute for Health Informatics (IHI) at the University of Minnesota is seeking a Junior Scientific Programmer/Data Scientist to join our dynamic IHI Data Scientist Specialist (IHIDSS) team. Led by Dr. Ma, the IHIDSS team applies cutting-edge machine learning and statistical methods to real-world problems across a range of areas such as mental health, aging, diabetes, addiction, brain science, cancer, and health equity. What You’ll Do

????????? Conduct Analytical Experiments (80%):

  • Create and manage datasets from various sources for cutting-edge research.
  • Design data processing pipelines to ensure integrity and security throughout the process.
  • Conduct experiments to benchmark machine learning algorithms with real-world biomedical and healthcare data.

???? Algorithm Development (10%):

  • Develop and implement machine learning, statistical, and bioinformatics algorithms.
  • Modify existing algorithms and contribute to the software development lifecycle.
  • Document code, experiments, and findings for reproducibility.

???? Publications and Presentations (10%):

  • Contribute to writing technical reports and scientific publications.
  • Communicate your findings clearly to a wide range of stakeholders, including scientists and clinicians.

What We’re Looking For

? Education & Experience:

  • B.A./B.S. in Computer Science, Math, Statistics, Physics, Informatics, or related technical field.
  • At least four years of relevant experience or a combination of education and experience (equivalent to eight years) in a research or technical environment.

???? Technical Skills:

  • Experience with Matlab, Python, or R.
  • Proficiency in SQL or other database technologies.
  • Ability to write code for complex systems. (Please provide links to code samples on GitHub or similar services.)

???? Data Expertise:

  • Familiarity with machine learning or statistical methods.
  • Experience working with complex or messy real-world data (a plus!).
  • Basic skills in data visualization.

???? Communication Skills: Strong ability to convey complex concepts to diverse audiences.


Additional Desirable Qualifications (Not Required)

  • Experience with high-performance computing.
  • Background in data science, statistics, or related research fields.
  • Published scientific papers in conferences or journals.
