The University of Virginia (UVA) is inviting talented and innovative Research Scientists to join its Data Analytics Center (DAC) within the Research Computing (RC) division. As a Research Scientist specializing in Image Processing, you will be at the forefront of cutting-edge research, using your expertise to process and analyze images and videos that power scientific discoveries across a variety of fields—from medical to environmental to industrial research.
Your Role:
In this dynamic role, you’ll collaborate with faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students to tackle some of the most exciting research challenges. Your work will be critical in processing complex imaging data to uncover insights and drive scientific progress.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate across disciplines: Work alongside researchers to apply your image processing expertise to support diverse research projects, advancing UVA’s scientific goals.
- Innovate with algorithms: Implement advanced image processing techniques to extract meaningful insights from medical, biological, environmental, and industrial imaging data.
- Leverage powerful tools: Use programming languages and software like Python, MATLAB, ImageJ, and frameworks such as OpenCV to perform complex tasks like image segmentation, feature extraction, pattern recognition, and 3D reconstruction.
- Refine methodologies: Integrate new image processing technologies to improve accuracy, efficiency, and reproducibility in research outcomes.
- Apply data science: Utilize statistical models and machine learning techniques to analyze image data and derive actionable insights that support research hypotheses.
- Share findings: Prepare detailed reports, visualizations, and publications that communicate the results of your analysis to the broader research community.
- Train and mentor: Collaborate with the Research Computing team to design and deliver training programs that address evolving needs in the field of image processing.
- Stay at the cutting edge: Keep your knowledge up-to-date by engaging with the broader community through conferences, workshops, and professional organizations.
Who You Are:
You are a passionate scientist with a strong background in image processing and a deep desire to contribute to groundbreaking research. You are proficient in key programming languages and eager to solve complex challenges using your expertise.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Advanced degree (Master’s or higher) in computer science, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, data science, or a related field.
- 2+ years of relevant experience in image processing and analysis.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, C++, or Java with experience in image processing libraries (e.g., OpenCV, scikit-image, ITK).
- Familiarity with high-performance computing or cloud-based platforms for large-scale image analysis.
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and problem-solving ability.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a team-based environment.
- U.S. citizenship or permanent residency (due to security requirements).
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD in computer science, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, data science, or a closely related field.
- 4+ years of experience in academic research, with publications and involvement in externally funded projects.
- Expertise in machine learning and deep learning for image analysis, particularly in medical imaging.
