The University of Virginia (UVA), in partnership with the UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center (UVACC), is inviting talented researchers to join an extraordinary team working on innovative cancer prevention and control strategies through the lens of Precision Health. This new initiative, backed by a $50M Grand Challenges research investment, aims to advance personalized approaches to cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment in diverse populations, with a focus on reducing cancer disparities.

We are seeking exceptional candidates at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank, with expertise in cancer epidemiology and/or data sciences, to lead pioneering research at the intersection of data science, artificial intelligence, and cancer prevention.

About the Role:

As a faculty member in the Department of Public Health Sciences (PHS) and the Cancer Prevention and Population Health Research Program at UVACC, you will be part of a multidisciplinary team shaping the future of Precision Health and cancer research. You will have the opportunity to:

  • Conduct cutting-edge research in personalized cancer prevention, risk prediction, and early detection strategies using data science and machine learning.
  • Explore individual, social, clinical, and community-level factors that influence cancer prevention and recurrence, with a special focus on reducing cancer disparities.
  • Develop an independent, world-leading research program focused on the science of cancer prevention, leveraging next-gen technologies such as AI, machine learning, and computer science.
  • Collaborate with top-tier researchers and healthcare professionals at UVA to translate research into actionable strategies for improving cancer outcomes in diverse populations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead innovative research to improve cancer prevention and outcomes through data-driven strategies.
  • Investigate critical cancer areas such as etiology, biomarkers, screening, early detection, and therapeutics, with a focus on cancers like lung, breast, GI, prostate, cervical, and melanoma.
  • Publish high-impact research in top-tier journals and secure external funding.
  • Collaborate across departments, including with UVACC’s various cancer research programs, to foster multidisciplinary approaches.
  • Contribute to the training and mentorship of graduate students, postdocs, and junior faculty.
  • Participate in and shape the Precision Health for Populations Initiative and UVA’s 2030 vision for Precision Medicine.

About You:

We are looking for individuals who are passionate about data science and cancer research and have a proven track record in both. Ideal candidates will have:

  • A Ph.D. or other terminal degree (e.g., MD, ScD) in public health, epidemiology, data science, or a related field.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in cancer-related research with a focus on cancer prevention, outcomes, or data-driven cancer strategies.
  • Peer-reviewed research with evidence of external funding in areas such as cancer biomarkers, early detection, or screening.
  • Strong experience with data science techniques, including AI, machine learning, and computational modeling.
  • A demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion in cancer research, especially in underserved populations.
