As a Sr. Data Scientist on our Pricing Algorithms team, you’ll use your expertise in machine learning and statistical modeling to make key decisions that drive CarMax’s $20B in inventory spend and shape the car-buying experience for millions of customers.
At CarMax, we blend data science with industry expertise to build pricing models that guide our decisions across over 200 stores. In this role, you will work directly with analysts and systems experts to develop predictive models and ensure they are deployed seamlessly to maximize business value. We are looking for someone who can leverage data to improve how we value cars and anticipate consumer demand, all while contributing to a culture that celebrates integrity, innovation, and collaboration.
What You’ll Do:
Develop and Improve Pricing Models
- Interpret, validate, and engineer features for complex pricing datasets.
- Apply statistical and machine learning techniques to build, validate, and enhance models that drive our pricing decisions.
- Lead the design of controlled experiments to measure the business value of new models, offering actionable insights to leadership.
Advance CarMax’s Data Expertise
- Stay ahead of industry trends by researching best practices, new data sources, and modeling techniques.
- Help shape the team’s strategic roadmap for modeling capabilities and data science tools.
Collaborate and Communicate
- Present your findings in a clear and impactful way to senior leaders, ensuring that complex concepts are understood at every level.
- Work alongside business analysts and systems experts to ensure models are deployed effectively across our business.
What We’re Looking For:

- Strong Foundations: You have a quantitative background with experience applying math and modeling skills to real-world challenges.

- Data Savvy: With experience in Python/SQL, data cleaning, and statistical analysis, you’re able to extract valuable insights from complex data.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field (or equivalent experience)
- At least 2 years of relevant work experience in data science or related fields
- Strong understanding of modeling techniques (e.g., supervised & unsupervised, classification & regression)
- Proficiency in Python/SQL programming and data pre-processing
Preferred:
- Expertise in developing and deploying machine learning models
- Experience managing machine learning pipelines
- Familiarity with statistical/probabilistic analysis techniques
