Position Overview:We are seeking a Research Data Scientist to lead UCR’s Data Science Initiative, supporting campus-wide research endeavors. As the central figure in this initiative, you will play a pivotal role in shaping UCR’s interdisciplinary research teams and helping them leverage data and AI to solve complex, data-intensive problems. From designing and implementing infrastructure solutions to providing consultation, you will drive impactful contributions to the research community at UCR.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate & Contribute: Partner with campus researchers from STEM, Liberal Arts, and Social Sciences to embed data science and AI expertise into their work.
- Solve Complex Problems: Address compute- and data-intensive research questions by designing, developing, and implementing innovative infrastructure and software solutions.
- Shape Research Agendas: Provide consultation, expert guidance, and education on data science and AI topics, aligning with faculty research goals.
- Develop Cutting-Edge Solutions: Contribute to the intellectual advancement of interdisciplinary research teams, incorporating your expertise to foster new ideas and methodologies.
- Engage with Campus Teams: Work closely with UCR colleges, academic programs, and departments such as Research and Economic Development, Information Technology Services, and Research Computing to ensure UCR remains at the forefront of data science.
What We’re Looking For:
- Expertise in Data Science & AI: A strong background in data science, machine learning, and AI applications, with experience in implementing data solutions across various research domains.
- Collaborative Spirit: Proven ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams and provide valuable consultation across academic fields.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Experience addressing complex research challenges using innovative data science techniques and solutions.
- Strong Communication: Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences and collaborate with faculty and staff at all levels.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced Degree: A Master’s or Ph.D. in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field.
- AI/Data Portfolio: Candidates are encouraged to include a CV or portfolio with examples of their AI or data-related work.
